Brenwy

Brenwy Infrastructure

Built in Britain. Built for independence.

The technology behind Brenwy. A clear account of our current hosting, the software we build and the infrastructure independence we are working towards.

Different responsibilities

Our software. Externally supplied infrastructure.

01

Brenwy

British-owned brand, applications and supporting software.

02

Vultr

External provider supplying our current UK application hosting.

03

Other processing

Suppliers such as Stripe have separate processing arrangements described in our privacy notice.

This is an ownership overview, not a network or deployment diagram.

UK-based hosting.

Brenwy currently operates services using data-centre infrastructure located in the United Kingdom.

Our infrastructure is supplied through Vultr, an external cloud infrastructure provider.

This gives us access to UK-based computing resources while we develop and operate Brenwy's services.

It's important to distinguish the physical location of our infrastructure from the ownership of the company providing it.

Brenwy is British-owned.

Vultr is an external infrastructure provider and is not a British-owned Brenwy data-centre operation.

This describes our current application hosting, not every supplier or type of processing. Stripe payment processing can involve international transfers. See our privacy notice for the detailed data-handling explanation.

British ownership and UK hosting are different things.

British-owned technology

Brenwy is an independent British-owned technology brand developing its own digital services.

UK-based infrastructure

Our current hosting arrangements use UK data-centre locations through an external provider.

Infrastructure independence

Our longer-term ambition includes exploring greater control over the infrastructure supporting Brenwy.

These are three related but different ideas.

We don't describe our current hosting arrangements as complete British infrastructure sovereignty.

Building our own software.

Infrastructure isn't only about physical servers.

A substantial part of a digital service is the software that operates on those servers.

Brenwy is developing its own applications and supporting systems, including:

Brenwy Search

Our own crawling, indexing and ranking technology forms the foundation of Brenwy Search.

Brenwy Mail

Email functionality supporting everyday personal and business communication.

Brenwy Calendar

A connected calendar application within the Brenwy ecosystem.

Brenwy Account

Identity, authentication, account sessions and subscription-management capabilities.

Brenwy Business

Organisation administration, domain verification, mailboxes and subscription-seat management.

Our focus is on building meaningful technical capability within Brenwy while using external infrastructure where appropriate.

How independent search works.

Brenwy Search is one of our most technically ambitious projects.

Rather than relying solely on another provider's search results, we're developing our own systems for:

  1. Discovering websites and URLs.
  2. Retrieving suitable web content.
  3. Processing documents for indexing.
  4. Building and maintaining a searchable index.
  5. Ranking relevant documents for search queries.

Our index is still growing, and search coverage and relevance remain active development priorities.

Reliability and operational responsibility.

Operating digital services means monitoring their health, responding to problems and maintaining the systems they depend on.

We're developing our operational processes alongside our applications.

For current incidents and maintenance information, visit our public service-status page.

We won't publish unverified uptime percentages or recovery-time guarantees.

What about data residency?

Using UK data centres does not necessarily mean every type of data processing is confined to the UK.

Third-party services, backups, support arrangements and other technical processes may have separate locations or legal considerations.

For a broader explanation, read our guide to UK-hosted data.

What does UK-hosted actually mean? →

Our longer-term ambition.

Towards greater infrastructure independence.

We want Brenwy to become more than a collection of applications.

Our long-term vision includes exploring greater independence in the infrastructure that supports those applications.

That may involve developing more of our own cloud technology and considering additional hosting arrangements as the business grows.

This is an ambition, not a commitment to a specific infrastructure deployment or release date.

For now, our priority is to operate useful services responsibly and improve them over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Brenwy British-owned?

Yes. Brenwy is a British-owned technology brand.

Are Brenwy's servers in the UK?

Brenwy currently uses UK-based data-centre infrastructure through Vultr. The privacy notice describes the processing and storage arrangements for individual services.

Does Brenwy own its data centres?

No. Our current infrastructure is supplied by an external provider.

Is Vultr a British company?

Vultr is a separate external infrastructure provider. Our use of UK data centres does not mean Brenwy owns them or controls every supplier jurisdiction.

Is Brenwy Search independently operated?

Brenwy is developing its own crawler, index and ranking systems for Brenwy Search.

Does UK hosting mean my data never leaves the UK?

Not necessarily. Data residency and international processing depend on the specific systems and suppliers involved.

Will Brenwy build its own cloud infrastructure?

Greater infrastructure independence is a long-term ambition. No specific deployment or launch date has been announced.
